10 of the Best Africa Photo Safari Tours in the World

Jeep in the Masai Mara lion is in front -safari Packing List
A classic African photographic safari moment

Do you dream of being a photographer in Africa, making amazing pictures of some of the most incredible animals in the world? One of the best and most economical options (relatively speaking) is to join a group on an African photo safari (tour) led by a professional wildlife photographer whose job it is to help you make the best images possible.

10 of the Best African Photos Safari Companies

To make finding one easier, I’ve put together a list of 10 of the Best African Photo Safari companies in the business.

Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know some amazing professional wildlife photographers as well as passionate enthusiasts who’ve raved about their photo safari experiences. Together, these relationships helped me create a directory of companies that deliver grand adventures, spectacular photographic opportunities, and life-long memories––each with their own spin. It’s up to you to decide which is right for you.

Lions walking toward a vehicle with a woman using a camera to photograph.Taken while on a Botswana photo safari

To make the task easier, I asked each company to fill out a questionnaire covering topics such as what they believe differentiates them from their competitors, destinations, lead photographers, vehicles, types of instruction (ie.. do they offer photo safari workshops or only tours, are they proactive, etc.) sample accommodations, starting costs, and for more conscientious travelers, conservation efforts they are strongly affiliated with ––details you’ll want to consider when choosing.

I’ve included images of the photographers (if provided), their bios and links to their individual wildlife galleries, plus a small collection of images each company feels best represents the experiences they offer. (FYI- all of the companies offer private African photo safaris as well.)

Most importantly, if a company piques your interest, contact them sooner than later–– ask as many questions as you need. While some spots may be open closer to the departure date most fill up months in advance.

I have no paid relationship or commission structure with any of these companies. PLEASE NOTE: The list is ordered alphabetically, not by rank.

(If you need some direction on how to choose a company that’s right for you, I wrote this primer: Seven Questions to Ask Yourself When Choosing A Photography Tour. While it’s not specifically focused on African safaris, everything still holds true.)

S. for many years now, East Africa remains her spiritual home.

Wim van den Heever

I have had an interest in both photography and nature for as long as I can remember. I come from a family where photography is more a lifestyle than a hobby, and we never missed an opportunity to visit the Southern African Game Parks. So, from an early age, my interest in both photography and the natural world were stimulated and facilitated. It was a natural progression to combine the two when life conspired to ensure that I was placed in a situation to enjoy Wildlife Photography as a profession and lifestyle rather than a hobby. Initially, I did do a lot of commercial photography to supplement my income as a wildlife photographer but I very quickly realized that my true passion was with wildlife and nature photography and my efforts were concentrated in making this a reality. Today I am the owner of Tusk Photo and as a company, we supply almost 3000 photographic bed-nights to various destinations in Africa and abroad.

Ben Cranke

Ben is a Namibian-born South African, who lives in London, UK. His passion for photography began as a young boy when his father gave him a second-hand camera. His Veterinary Science degree strengthened his affiliation with the animal world and his desire to photograph them in their natural environment. Ben’s penchant for the outdoors and his insatiable wunderlust has, amongst others, seen him climb mountains, inaugurate the Red Ape Trail in Borneo, sail across the Drake Passage and winter-ski across Norway’s snowy countryside. Ben now combines both passions by leading specialist photographic tours to incredible destinations.

Conservation Initiatives

Wild Eye, in conjunction with Panthera, co-hosted the worldwide premiere of the new Lion King movie in the interests of raising awareness of the plight of lions across the African continent. Furthermore, Wild Eye facilitated the raising of significant funds for the ongoing big cat conservation programs run and managed by Panthera all over the African continent.

The company recently sponsored and managed the installation of a borehole facility in the Mara Triangle Conservancy in Kenya, not only for the purposes of providing safe, clean drinking water for all of the Mara Triangle’s conservancy staff, and mobile camping operators, but also to use within the conservancy as and when current water supplies are low. The use of the borehole facility also raises funds for the Mara Triangle Conservancy, to assist them in their ongoing efforts to protect and conserve the Mara Triangle.

  1. Fiona Gibson says:

Why is the cover photo Game Watchers / Porini Camp In Kenya but they don’t feature on the list ? We has the most fantastic stay at their camp. The Masai guides especially Wilson were outstanding. The photograph opportunities boundless. The photo on your cover should be acknowledged as their company?

    • Susan Portnoy says:

Hi Fiona – Thank you for your thoughtful question.

I’ll tackle your question in parts. The main reason I used that photo is it depicts a classic safari moment, the side of the jeep with the logo is illegible. I understand that you recognized it but I think it’s likely that the majority won’t and the purpose is to provide a beginning ambiance to the post.

Game Watchers specifically was not included for a few reasons.
      1. I’ve never heard of them and I only include those companies that through my own experience or were suggested by veteran photo safari-goers I trust.
      2. Game Watchers is not a photo safari company – which all the others are. And while I’m sure your guide was fantastic, all the companies I listed have professional wildlife photographers that lead their group tours.
      3. Game Watchers is not a group tour outfit.

I hope this helps to answer your questions. If not, I’m happy to clarify further. Have a great day!

      • Fiona Gibson says:

        Thanks for your reply.
Unfortunately the Masai guide at Porini saw your piece. He was upset the photo was used and no mention of the company especially as he is an enthusiastic and an accomplished photograher.
I absolutely can recommend them. We stayed at the Amboseli Conservancy and the Masai Mara Conservancy. The guides were very knowledgable and the photography opportunities endless. Our photos were stunning. I hope you get to stay at one of their camps ..you will love it !
        Best Wishes. Fiona

  2. Etienne says:

What’s a great read, clearly a lot of research and personal experience was shared. Will be very helpful to any visitor looking to maximize their African photography experience with any of these great companies. Regards Etienne

  3. Andrew Beck says:

Thank you so much for the feature and for including the Wild Eye team Susan!

One trend I picked up on was that very few companies are involved in any conservation initiatives. I hope that this is something that will change over time and I hope that those that are already involved in some sort of conservation initiative will be inspired to do even more!

  4. Patricia Pomerleau says:

Well done Susan! What an enormous amount of effort and focus. Great information on the tour companies that will help many with their decisions. As you know, once you go to Africa, you are addicted to Africa.

    • Susan Portnoy says:

Thank you so much, Patricia! I’m glad you feel it rates. I hoped you would since you know what it’s like. 🙂

I would love to hear from you! What did you think of the post?
