I love steelcut oatmeal. I love the texture – slightly al dente – and a richer flavor than regular rolled oats. It’s my kind of morning comfort food. Add some fresh berries or raisins and I am in heaven.
The thing that’s not so great about steelcut oatmeal is the time it takes to make: 20 minutes minimum. Plus the pot is always gucked up and the clean up, even with a non-stick pan, is less than fun.
So one day I see a link from Epicurious.com entitled the “11 Trader Joe’s Products We Can’t Live Without,” and since there’s a Trader Joe’s on my corner, I was intrigued by the following review:
“Steelcut Oatmeal. TJ’s two-pack of frozen (yes, we said FROZEN!) steel-cut oatmeal, gently flavored with brown sugar and maple syrup, is much more delicious than it ought to be. The first time you pop the hard chunk of oatmeal into the microwave, you might be very skeptical, but once you taste these chewy, nutty, wholly satisfying oats, you will have a hard time going back to the stovetop version. Just to make a long story short, they’re not kidding. I’m in love. It’s a staple in my morning regime, especially after working out, and they’re at the top of my list next time I’m out of town and have a kitchenette. Four minutes in a microwave, plop in some raisins, fresh fruit or milk, and I’m all set.
