The Union Square Greenmarket

Looking for a palm reading with your baked goods? Or some hydrangea and a game of chess? On a visit to Union Square’s Greenmarket, it was all that and a man in a Speedo

It was a beautiful Saturday morning and I, along with every other New Yorker it seemed, was anxious to get my fill. I made my way to Union Square figuring there would be a lot of activity and perhaps some good photographic opportunities. When I arrived at 10:30 am I wasn’t disappointed.

  • Shoppers pick bouquets from flower vendors at the Union Square greenmarket
  • Dried flowers and chilis and the Union Square Greenmarket
  • Bouquet of Flowers at the Union Square Greenmarket
  • Pussy willows in Union Square Greenmarket
  • Chili bouquets and dried flowers at the Union Square Greenmarket
  • Flowering tree in Union Square

The Square was filled with flowers of all kinds and it finally felt like spring!

The flowers weren’t the only things bursting with color.

The food wasn’t half bad either….

  • Potatoes at the Union Square Greenmarket
  • Yarn from Catskill Merino at Union Square Green Market
  • Ribbons of Pasta at the Union Square Greenmarket
  • Colored eggs at the farmer's market in the greenmarket in Union Square

Nearby, these sweet Mormon missionaries were handing out Easter eggs with their evangelism…

Enthusiasts of all ages were playing chess…

  • Two men play chess in Union Square, NYC
  • Man and boy congratulate each other after a game of chess in Union Square
  • Chess players in Union Square

And for those who desired a little fortune-telling, this lady and her crystal ball seemed to have all the answers…

There was this guy…..

I asked him if he made his costume, “I bought it at Target” her replied

And then this happened….

A man and his Speedo in Union Square
An intriguing ensemble, don’t you think?

And just when I thought the performance couldn’t get any better, his friend joined in…

Not sure what was going on here but it was very entertaining

The Union Square Greenmarket is open Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 8 am to 6 pm. At peak season you can find over 140 farmers, fisherman, and bakers, not to mention a sea of flowers and plants, and maybe, if you’re very lucky, the guy in the Speedo too…
