Aristotle supposedly said, ““Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet.”  I’m not sure if waiting 15 minutes for a gap in the crowd and a man to ride by on his motorcycle was necessarily bitter, but there’s not doubt that Drew Hopper’s patience netted him an awesome capture.

Truly special images are those that compel you take a second and third look to fully grasp all its layers. This image did that for me.  I love the juxtaposition of the painted rider with the real biker and the real rider and bike. Life imitating art and vice versa.

According to Drew, the artwork on the door in Penang in Mylasia is immensely popular and draws crowds for “cheesy selfies,” but he didn’t go the way of the masses, he wanted something a little different. He waited 15 minutes for just the right moment and Bam! He got it.

Drew explains how he captured this shot on his  Facebook page:

“Boy on a Bike is a mural on the wall along Ah Quee Street, in George Town, Penang. The painting is the work of Lithuanian-born artist Ernest Zacharevic, who was commission by the Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP) in conjunction with the 2012 George Town Festival. The painting is on the door of a shophouse in a narrow street and is of the most famous artworks in the area. You basically have to line up to have a cheesy selfie with the door, but I didn’t want that, I wanted to capture a sense of motion with a passing motorcycle. I waited 15 minutes for a gap in the crowd of people and fortunately a motorcycle came past at just the right time. — at Georgetown World Heritage, Penang Malaysia.”

  1. Could this be the work of Banksy? It sure looks like his style. Although, incorporating real objects in the street art is not a frequent practice for him.

I would love to hear from you!
