If you dream of adventure, the kind that comes with a tropical rainforest, exotic animals and fascinating indigenous cultures, consider a river cruise on the Peruvian Amazon. Whether on your own or have family in tow, it’s a great way to indulge your inner explorer without giving up a hot shower or a Pisco Sour.

Here’s why….

1. The Amazon is incredibly diverse

The Amazon is the largest river system in the world and renowned for its biodiversity. There are 25 thousand species of plants, over a thousand species of birds, and hundreds of species of mammals, amphibians and reptiles that call the river home. It’s an magical world filled with sights and sounds most people will never experience, and you can only get there by boat.

2. It’s great for solo travelers

A river cruise in the Amazon is an ideal choice for solo travelers who crave an exciting journey but prefer to kick back and let someone else handle the details. Another reason: river boats aren’t as big as their ocean-crossing cousins (on my recent cruise with International Expeditions the ship only held 40 guests max), making it easier to get to know everyone and develop a sense of camaraderie. And because other people will be attracted to the cruise for the same reasons as you, that like-mindedness invites conversation and inspires new friendships.

3. There’s plenty to keep you occupied

From the first boat ride in the morning until cocktails at night, you’ll never be at a loss for something to do. There’s hours of exploration, lectures on Amazonian culture, culinary demonstrations, salsa lessons, and cultural visits to local fishing villages, just to name of few of the activities you’ll enjoy.

4. It’s an amazing learning experience

You’ll be amazed at the your naturalists’ encyclopedic knowledge of the flora and fauna. You won’t encounter a bird, bug, or mammal they can’t tell you about. And they’re just as savvy when it comes to local cultures and customs. Through guided, interactive experiences, you’ll learn how the villagers face the complexities of the river and the rainforest, for an authentic peek at life on the Amazon.

5. You won’t miss your creature comforts

After an exciting day gliding along the Amazon, piranha fishing, swimming or perhaps discovering a sloth or two, there’s nothing better than coming back to the boat for some good food, a comfy bed, a hot shower and air conditioning.

6. Extremely convenient

While it’s true for cruising in general, it’s worthwhile to note whether you’re in the Atlantic or floating up the Amazon, traveling on a ship is extremely convenient. Imagine navigating hundreds of miles up the Amazon, exploring a different place everyday, without needing to unpack and re-pack each time. Genius, right?

I was a guest of International Expeditions, however the words and sentiment are my own.

  1. I really enjoyed this post. A college of mine spent four weeks traveling on the Amazon and I had the pleasure of telling his story. It really left me with an amazing desire to visit the Amazon. It’s simply amazing how many animals were visible right from the boat. Your photos were simply phenomenal.

I would love to hear from you!
