Photos I Wish I Had Taken: Timothy Allen – Light Is Everthing!

Listen to any professional photographer and they’ll tell you that a good photograph is all about the light. Of course that’s true, beautiful lighting can take an ordinary setting and make it captivating while the most beautiful vista in bad light will lose much of its luster.

Timothy Allen is one of my favorite photographers of all time, and it was no surprise to me last year when he won Travel Photographer of the Year. His images are stunning—all of them.

But what captured my attention when I first became aware of his work was his remarkable use of light. In portraits it’s as if his subjects are illuminated from within. He uses the light to create mystery and intrigue in a way that’s incredibly compelling. You want to know the story behind each image. You want to know about the people and places that find themselves in front of his lens.

Best known for his work behind the scenes as the still photographer for the BBC documentary series, Human Planet, Allen’s work focuses on the lives of indigenous people in remote areas around the world. It’s a fantastic body of work and I highly recommend that you take a look.
