Rediscovering New York: Union Square’s Greenmarket Is Far More Than Tulips And Marmalade

Looking for a palm reading with your baked goods? Or some hydrangea and a game of chess? On a recent visit to Union Square’s Greenmarket, it was all that and a man in a Speedo…..

It was a beautiful Saturday morning and I, along with every other New Yorker it seemed, was anxious to get my fill. I made my to way to Union Square figuring there would be a lot of activity and perhaps some good photographic opportunities. When I arrived at 10:30am I wasn’t disappointed…..

The Square was filled with flowers of all kinds and it finally felt like spring!

The flowers weren’t the only things bursting with color…

The food wasn’t half bad either….

Serving up their own brand of sunshine, the Krishnas drew a crowd…

Nearby, these sweet Mormon missionaries were handing out Easter eggs with their evangelism…

Enthusiasts of all ages were playing chess…

And for those who desired a little fortune-telling, this lady and her crystal ball seemed to have all the answers…

There was this guy…..

And then this happened….

And just when I thought the performance couldn’t get any better, his friend joined in…

The Union Square greenmarket is open Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 8am to 6pm. At peak season you can find over 140 farmers, fisherman and bakers, not to mention a sea of flowers and plants, and maybe, if you’re very lucky, the guy in the Speedo too…
